Louisville Airport Plans $100M Terminal Renovation Revealed

Louisville International Airport, now officially Louisville Muhammad Ali International, is planning a possible $100 million renovation to modernize its facilities.

Officials are considering a new terminal that would emphasize contemporary design and increased natural light, replacing aspects of the existing 1990s-era building that are showing their age.

“More than anything, we’ve got an aging facility and it’s needed a lot of work,” said Dan Mann, executive director of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority. “We want to have that gateway to our community that has a lasting and favorable impression.”

Proposed upgrades include a new terminal featuring 24 jet bridges and moving walkways, with construction expected over the next five to six years. The plan would also reorganize parking and rental car operations, add about 1,000 parking spaces, and position the rental car facility on the same level as baggage claim to improve passenger flow. These changes aim to accommodate roughly 12 percent annual growth in airport traffic.

Funding for the project is expected to come from the airport’s existing revenues, federal grants, and operating reserves.
