Recognizing bread as a staple of German cuisine, Lufthansa now serves business-class passengers on long-haul flights departing from Germany breads created exclusively for the airline by baker-sommelier and World Baker of the Year 2022, Axel Schmitt. Baked fresh each day from natural ingredients and without additives, these breads are accompanied by house-made butter and high-quality olive oil. The selection will rotate quarterly to showcase seasonal variations and new recipes.

In addition to the bread program, Lufthansa will introduce a signature aperitif in long-haul business class: the Avionic Apéritif. Served before takeoff alongside water, sparkling wine and nuts, this drink was developed by Ziegler Distillery together with Frankfurt bartender Sven Riebel, noted in Germany’s bar community. The Avionic Apéritif blends notes of peach, wild meadow herbs and tonic to offer a light, aromatic pre-meal option.

“The entire Lufthansa team is proud to present our new Business Class experience. Our culinary offerings highlight the celebration of German bread culture and the collaboration with traditional brands, such as Ziegler, for the new Lufthansa Aperitif Avionic, underline the timeless elegance of our brand,” said Heiko Reitz, chief commercial officer at Lufthansa. He added that additional product rollouts across travel classes will follow as part of the airline’s broader effort to raise the on-board experience for guests.

Other menu enhancements include a vegetarian amuse-bouche offered in business class for the first time, and the addition of fresh fruit to dessert selections. A new modular snack concept will give passengers more flexibility: ideal for smaller appetites or between main services, it features a curated mix of snacks, fresh fruit and both savory and sweet items on longer flights. Starting in June, every passenger will also receive a small box of Lindt chocolates as a parting gift.

These changes reflect Lufthansa’s focus on quality ingredients, thoughtful culinary partnerships and a more personalized service approach. By rotating bread varieties, introducing a dedicated signature aperitif and expanding vegetarian and snack options, the airline aims to create a more varied and satisfying in-flight dining program that complements its updated cabin product.
