Memorial Day at Mount Vernon: Events, Hours & Visitor Guide

Observe Memorial Day at President George Washington’s historic Mount Vernon and enjoy an evening of authentic 18th‑century Americana. For two nights—May 24 and 25—the estate opens after hours for guided tours of the mansion, allowing visitors to experience the home in the quieter, lantern-lit atmosphere that follows the daytime crowds.

After touring the beautifully restored rooms, guests can relax on the lawn overlooking the Potomac River where wine and desserts are available for purchase. The event features period music, dancing and games, creating a family-friendly setting where costumed interpreters bring the grounds to life as visitors stroll among the candlelit pathways.

Please note that annual passes are not valid for this event. All activities are included with admission except for food and wine, which are available for separate purchase.

Mount Vernon is privately owned and operated by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association. Since acquiring the estate from the Washington family in 1858, the Association has fulfilled its mission to preserve and protect the property. The estate’s upkeep depends entirely on private donations, admission revenue, and proceeds from its restaurants and retail operations.

If you’re planning a visit, expect a mix of historical interpretation and relaxed evening entertainment that highlights life in 18th‑century Virginia while offering memorable views of the river at sunset.
