Scottish Farm Where Hospitality Meets Wildlife Conservation

Known as the Gateway to the Highlands, the Braes of Doune in Stirlingshire, Scotland, is home to Argaty Red Kites, a working farm on the Argaty Estate. Here the Scottish Lowlands meet the wild Highlands, offering travelers a chance to experience rugged landscapes and abundant wildlife.

The red kite resides within Argaty Estate after being reintroduced to the area by conservation organizations and local partners. Once Britain’s most common bird of prey, the red kite had all but vanished from Scotland and much of England by the early 20th century following centuries of persecution. The reintroduction at Argaty is part of a wider recovery that has brought this striking raptor back to the skies of central Scotland.

Niall and Lynn Bowser played a central role in bringing the red kite back to their 1,400-acre farm at Argaty and subsequently established Argaty Red Kites. For more than two decades, Argaty has operated Central Scotland’s only regular red kite feeding station, welcoming both locals and visitors who want to observe and learn about these birds up close.

When their son Tom and his wife took over the farm and the conservation project, they expanded the visitor experience. They renovated Argaty Cottage so guests can stay on the estate and spend more time exploring the land and its wildlife. A second cottage is currently being refurbished to increase accommodation options for visitors.

Argaty Cottage accommodates up to six guests and features a log-burning stove, private garden and complimentary WiFi, among other comforts. Guests staying at the self-catering cottage receive discounted rates for visits to the red kite feeding station and for guided ATV buggy tours of the estate, allowing for extended wildlife viewing and exploration.

A wide range of activities is available during a stay at Argaty. Bespoke wildlife tours introduce guests to local species and habitats; pond-dipping and dragonfly walks engage families and nature enthusiasts; and hands-on workshops teach visitors how to build bird boxes they can take home. Seasonal experiences include joining the farm team as a shepherd for a day, particularly during lambing season.

Situated less than 50 miles from Edinburgh and about 35 miles from Glasgow, Argaty Estate is easily accessible for day visitors and those seeking a longer rural break. Whether visitors come to watch the graceful red kites, learn about conservation, or simply enjoy the Highland fringes, Argaty offers an immersive and authentic Scottish countryside experience.
