Top U.S. Travel Destinations to Visit in 2016

Lonely Planet recently published its annual list of the best U.S. destinations to visit this year. Compiled by the publisher’s U.S.-based writers and editors, the list highlights well-known favorites as well as lesser-known spots that deserve wider recognition.

The top three destinations named this year are Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Natchez, Mississippi; and Yellowstone National Park. Also featured on the list are Birmingham, Alabama; Alaska; Somerville, Massachusetts; Northwest Arkansas; San Antonio, Texas; southern New Mexico; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

“These are the places to pay attention to this year. Whether they’ve been on the public radar for years or are only recently emerging as travel hotspots, each destination offers compelling reasons to visit,” said Rebecca Warren, U.S. destination editor at Lonely Planet.

The destinations were selected for a variety of reasons, including milestone anniversaries, hosting major events, and notable growth in food, bar, and music scenes. Many of the places on the list are seeing renewed investment in cultural and culinary offerings, making them increasingly attractive to travelers seeking fresh experiences.

Philadelphia combines rich history with a thriving contemporary food scene, while Natchez draws visitors with its well-preserved antebellum architecture and cultural events. Yellowstone remains a top draw for its dramatic landscapes and wildlife viewing opportunities, and Alaska continues to appeal to those seeking remote wilderness and outdoor adventure.

Other featured locales reflect diverse travel interests: Birmingham and Milwaukee are gaining attention for regional culinary and craft-beer movements; Somerville and Northwest Arkansas are praised for creative communities and arts scenes; San Antonio blends historic attractions with modern cultural programming; and southern New Mexico offers unique desert landscapes and cultural heritage.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a longer trip, the list offers ideas across a range of travel styles—urban exploration, culinary journeys, music-focused trips, and nature-oriented adventures. These picks can serve as a starting point for planning an itinerary that matches your interests for the year.
