Long regarded as one of the world’s most esteemed and inspirational luxury retreats, Huka Lodge sits amid landscaped gardens on the banks of the Waikato River near Lake Taupō on New Zealand’s North Island.

Founded more than a century ago as a fishermen’s camp beside a trout-rich river, Huka Lodge has evolved into one of New Zealand’s most historic luxury lodges, celebrated for its heritage and timeless charm.
The property features 20 guest suites and two private Owners’ Residences, each with spacious bathrooms and large windows that frame the river and its ever-changing light. Since joining the Baillie Lodges collection in early 2021, Huka Lodge has strengthened its reputation for refined hospitality and exceptional natural surroundings.

“Huka Lodge has long set the standard for excellence in luxury lodging, and we are honored that Baillie Lodges will serve as its new steward,” said James Baillie, founder of Baillie Lodges.
The lodge is well known for curated golf and fishing packages, available on weekends and mid-week. Golf options include rounds at two nearby 18-hole courses: the Kinloch Signature course by Jack Nicklaus and the Wairakei International course, located within a 445-acre wildlife sanctuary where native birdsong and flowing streams create a unique natural soundtrack. Guests may encounter leading New Zealand golfers during their stay.

Fishing experiences are a standout, often including a private fly-casting lesson followed by a half-day guided fly-fishing trip on Lake Taupō. Packages typically provide a picnic for two, fishing gear and licenses, and a handcrafted New Zealand rimu timber fly box as a keepsake.
Dining at Huka Lodge showcases the best of New Zealand produce, with menus that change daily to reflect seasonal ingredients. The lodge’s wine list complements the cuisine, and meals can be enjoyed in the main dining room or in one of several distinctive settings around the estate—such as the Wine Cellar, the Orchard or the Jetty Pavilion. Under Chef Paul Froggatt, guests can expect regional specialties like Te Matuku oysters, Matangi beef, Mount Cook alpine salmon and Southland lamb, prepared with attention to flavour and provenance.
