Discover Tromsø: Experience Northern Norway’s Unique Culture

Positioned above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is an excellent base for experiencing northern Norway — from the winter spectacle of the Northern Lights to summer adventures under the Midnight Sun. The town’s waterfront hosts the Polar Museum, widely regarded as one of Norway’s foremost museums, which offers a detailed look at Arctic life, historic seal hunting and the region’s polar expeditions. Exhibits cover notable explorers such as Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen, and members of Amundsen’s teams, giving visitors a clear sense of the hardships and achievements of early polar travel.

For panoramic views of the city and surrounding fjords, take the cable car to the Storsteinen viewing platform. Two cars operate year-round, providing easy access to the terrace at Fjellstua restaurant where you can enjoy a meal, coffee or cake while admiring Tromsdalstinden, the deep fjords and the sea. Those same viewpoints are spectacularly different by season: in summer you can bask in long daylight hours of the Midnight Sun, while in winter the dark skies are ideal for witnessing the Northern Lights.

Back in town, the Polaria exhibition center offers an up-close look at Arctic marine life. Scheduled feeding times let visitors observe creatures such as bearded seals and learn about local ecosystems. A short stroll from the center will bring you to Glasshytta Blast, a studio-shop where visitors can watch glass artists craft delicate works and purchase handmade pieces.

Architectural highlights include crossing the city bridge to the iconic Ishavskatedralen, commonly called the Arctic Cathedral. Designed by Jan Inge Hovig, the cathedral is notable for its dramatic A-frame silhouette, striking glass façade and a vivid stained-glass mosaic by Victor Sparre. The church’s organ, installed in 2005 by Grönlunds Orgelbyggeri in a French Romantic style, features traditional elements including bellows lined with reindeer hide.

After sightseeing, sample Tromsø’s seafood tradition at local favorites like Arctandria, where fresh fish is a specialty and seasonal catches are prepared simply to showcase natural flavors. Whether your interests are cultural, culinary or natural, Tromsø combines accessible museums, dramatic scenery and authentic Arctic experiences in a compact, visitor-friendly town.
