Swimming, surfing, sunbathing, sailing or enjoying a cocktail — Mexico’s roughly 5,800 miles of coastline deliver a wide range of beach experiences that aren’t one-size-fits-all. From strong ocean swells ideal for serious water sports to calm coves rich in marine life, Mexico’s coastal towns offer everything from luxurious resorts to cozy homestays and budget options. Fresh seafood and tempting tacos are available nearly everywhere, too. With so many appealing choices, it can be hard to pick a new destination. Instead of defaulting to well-known spots like Los Cabos or Cancún, consider some lesser-visited beach towns that offer distinct charms and memorable experiences.
Across the Gulf of California from Los Cabos lies Mazatlán, one of Mexico’s most underrated and safe beach cities. The city itself sits directly on the coast and features a spectacular six-mile oceanfront promenade (malecón) where cliff divers perform, sunsets draw crowds, and numerous seafood stalls supply local kitchens with fresh catch daily. Beyond this celebrated stretch—among the longest and cleanest promenades in the world—Mazatlán offers about 20 miles of beaches. Pause from the sand to explore the historic center, where local heritage and architecture add a cultural dimension you may not find in busier resort towns.

If surfing is your passion or you want to learn, head to Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca. Playa Zicatela is famous among experienced surfers for its powerful swells and unpredictable waves, especially in summer. Many visitors come to watch the action rather than to surf. Playa Carrizalillo is a gentler, more beginner-friendly bay with calm water, board rentals and instructors available—an excellent option for learning or enjoying a relaxed surf session. La Punta offers an intermediate challenge: more manageable than Zicatela but still requiring skill, and it’s a great spot for surfers looking for variety.
To the east, the tiny island of Holbox embodies a relaxed, slow-paced beach life. Located between the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, Holbox has no cars and very few paved roads, creating a tranquil island atmosphere. The small town is walkable and dotted with fresh eateries and vibrant street art. In season, Holbox is also a top place to spot and swim with whale sharks, offering a rare and gentle wildlife encounter in a serene setting.
INFO TO GO
Mazatlán International Airport receives direct flights from several U.S. cities and offers many connections through Mexico City (MEX). Puerto Escondido International Airport currently requires a connection via Mexico City or Guadalajara (GDL). Visitors typically reach Holbox by flying into Cancún International Airport and then traveling by car or bus to Chiquilá, followed by a short ferry ride to the island. Some travelers also charter small flights from Cancún or nearby cities to Holbox’s airstrip.
