Last month, the two Le Corbusier houses at the Weißenhof Estate in Stuttgart, Germany, were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. This recognition is the first for the city in southern Germany and the 41st UNESCO designation for the country as a whole.
Stuttgart’s nomination was part of a transnational application that included destinations in seven other countries, resulting in the inscription of 17 of Le Corbusier’s buildings. The collection highlights the architect’s pivotal role in the development of Modernist architecture worldwide.
The Le Corbusier houses at the Weißenhof Estate are the architect’s only completed projects in Germany and include the Weißenhof Museum. These works illustrate his forward-looking ideas and the significant shifts in architectural thinking that occurred around the time of World War II.
Germany’s other UNESCO World Heritage sites include Cologne Cathedral, the Wadden Sea, Classical Weimar and the Old Town of Regensburg.
