Japan Airlines Adds Sky Suites to 787-9 Dreamliners for Premium Comfort

Japan Airlines is introducing its updated JAL Sky Suite configuration on Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, beginning service on the Tokyo Narita (NRT) to Kuala Lumpur (KUL) route later this month.

This rollout is part of a broader fleet refurbishment program that will bring the new Sky Suite layouts to JAL’s 777-300ER/777-200ER, 767-300ER and 787-8/787-9 aircraft. The airline has already deployed the new cabins on selected international flights and will continue to expand the installation across more routes.

Once the Kuala Lumpur route receives the upgrade, the updated 787-9 Dreamliner configuration will be gradually introduced on other international services. Each affected aircraft will be retrofitted to accommodate the new layout.

The updated configuration features the fully lie-flat Sky Suite III business-class seat. Compared with the current layout, the revamped cabin increases business-class capacity to 52 seats from the previous 44, allowing the carrier to offer more premium seats while maintaining a comfortable experience.

Sky Suite III is arranged in a 1-2-1 layout, ensuring every passenger has direct aisle access. The seat converts into a bed with a maximum length of about 78 inches, designed to enhance long-haul comfort. Each seat also includes a 17-inch monitor for in-flight entertainment, a retractable privacy partition, a universal power outlet and a USB port, providing the connectivity and privacy travelers expect on international flights.

By rolling out the Sky Suite III across its long-haul fleet, Japan Airlines aims to improve the passenger experience while standardizing a modern business-class product across multiple aircraft types. The staggered introduction will let frequent flyers experience the new cabin progressively as more aircraft complete their retrofits and return to service.

Travelers planning flights on the NRT–KUL route later this month should check their booking and seat assignments to confirm whether their flight will operate with the new Sky Suite III-equipped 787-9, as aircraft changes and schedule adjustments may affect which configuration is used on any given service.
