West Virginia’s Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum opened in 1864 intending to house a few hundred patients but reached overcrowded extremes by midcentury. Conditions deteriorated as thousands were confined in inadequate facilities, and many patients suffered or died under harsh circumstances. Today, private caretakers manage the property and run paranormal tours that allow visitors to explore the sprawling grounds and hear the stories of the asylum’s troubled past.
