An existing biosphere reserve in Japan was expanded to include Mount Hakusan and nearby traditional villages such as Shirakawa-go and the Gokayama World Heritage site. The enlargement increased the protected area to four times its original size. First established in 1980, the biosphere region now supports nearly 17,000 permanent residents and reinforces the connection between cultural heritage and mountain ecosystems.
