Guaita Castle, one of the three towers guarding the microstate of San Marino, traces its origins to the 11th century. Historically a defensive fortress, its towers once housed prisons and now contain museum displays of medieval arms and local history. Two of the towers are open to the public, and visitors are rewarded with sweeping vistas of the Italian countryside below.
