4 Must-Visit New NYC Restaurants Opening in 2023

In a city where it’s often said you could dine at a different restaurant every day for nearly 23 years without repeating one, New York City continually welcomes new and exciting food and beverage concepts. This month is no different: three distinctive openings are inviting locals and visitors alike to explore fresh dining experiences across the five boroughs.

taste56

Located in Brooklyn in a restored 1892 building, taste56 is a wine shop and interactive tasting room that emphasizes education and discovery. Experienced sommeliers staff the space daily, guiding guests through curated tastings drawn from a rotating selection of 56 featured wines. The shop is arranged using a Palate Character system, grouping bottles by flavor profile and texture rather than strictly by grape or region. That approach makes it easy to find wines that match a mood or meal, whether you’re shopping the full selection or dropping in for a walk-in tasting solo or with friends.

Next door, the sister concept bar56 expands the experience into food and wine pairings, letting visitors linger over small plates and glasses in a relaxed, approachable setting. Together, the two venues create a cohesive destination for a full day—or evening—of tasting and socializing.

Tsubame

In Tribeca, Tsubame introduces a highly focused omakase and kaiseki-inspired experience led by chef-owner Jay Zheng. Rooted in Japanese culinary traditions, kaiseki emphasizes seasonality and meticulous technique. At Tsubame, the chef’s counter seats just 10 guests, who are served an eight-course progression that balances classic Japanese elements with subtle Western touches such as caviar and truffle. The menu highlights seasonal Japanese ingredients and diverse preparations, and the beverage program includes a growing sake selection sourced from World Sake Imports; a wine program will be added soon. The intimate counter format emphasizes craft and connection, offering a thoughtful tasting that unfolds course by course.

Tacombi

Anchored in the East Village, Tacombi’s newest location places a Mexican taqueria concept at the heart of New York’s street-level dining scene. This outpost is the brand’s first counter-service-only location led by Master Taqueros, focusing on speed without sacrificing authenticity. A communal standing table encourages quick, sociable meals while showcasing a menu unique to this site. Highlights include Tacos de Suadero—slow-braised beef in the style of Mexico City—and Tacos de Longaniza, seasoned ground pork flavored with garlic, dried chiles, achiote, cumin and clove. Refreshing cocktails such as the classic Margarita Clásica and the Sandia Santa (watermelon, lime and tequila) round out the offering for a casual, flavorful experience.

Lala’s Brooklyn Apizza

In East Williamsburg, Lala’s Brooklyn Apizza opens as a rooftop destination serving classic Brooklyn-style pies with seasonal toppings and skyline views. Created by Lauren and Joe Grimm—the team behind Grimm Artisanal Ales and Physica Wines—Lala’s focuses on pizza craft and summer-driven ingredients. Notable pies include Hot Pepperoni topped with tomato sauce, pepperoni, serrano chiles and honey; the Clam pie with local little neck clams, aged mozzarella, garlic, Physica Riesling butter sauce and fresh parsley; and Squashed, which combines summer squash medallions, squash blossoms, ricotta, an egg yolk drizzle and cracked black pepper. The rooftop setting adds a relaxed, al fresco vibe perfect for warm-weather evenings.

These openings reflect New York’s dynamic food scene: from intimate, reservation-only counter experiences to approachable neighborhood concepts and elevated wine destinations. Each spot brings its own personality—whether exploring palate-driven wine pairings, savoring a seasonal omakase, grabbing a quick taco or sharing a rooftop pie—adding fresh reasons to revisit the city’s ever-evolving dining map.
