United Airlines has raised its checked bag fees, joining other carriers such as JetBlue, Air Canada and WestJet in increasing ancillary charges. The fee for a first checked bag is now $30, up from $25, while the second checked bag has increased from $35 to $40.
Passengers on cross-border flights to destinations in Canada will now pay $50 for checked baggage.
An airline spokesperson told Bloomberg News that the carrier is adjusting checked bag fees in selected markets to support ongoing investments that improve the travel experience, noting many of those fees had not changed in about eight years.
Airlines typically cite rising costs—including higher fuel expenses and other operational pressures—when explaining fee increases. Industry observers expect competing U.S. carriers such as Delta Air Lines and American Airlines may announce similar increases. So far, Southwest remains the only major U.S. carrier that has not raised its standard checked bag fee.
For travelers, these changes mean higher out-of-pocket costs for checked luggage, making it more important to review ticket terms and baggage allowances before booking. Many passengers are responding by traveling lighter, choosing carry-on only when possible, or comparing total travel costs across carriers to find the best value. Travelers who frequently check bags should review loyalty program benefits and credit card perks that offer baggage fee waivers to offset the increased charges.
United’s adjustment is part of a wider industry trend toward generating more revenue from ancillary services. Besides checked baggage, airlines have increasingly relied on fees for seat selection, change and cancellation fees, onboard amenities, and priority boarding. These revenue streams allow carriers to keep base fares competitive while covering rising operational costs.
As the industry reacts to higher expenses, passengers can expect baggage policies and fees to remain a key area of change. Before flying, check your itinerary and fare rules for the most current baggage allowances and fees to avoid surprises at the airport.
