New Orleans Airport Terminal Opening Delayed Again

New Orleans is constructing a $1 billion airport terminal, but the opening has been delayed again, now pushed a few months later than originally planned due to issues with a failing sewer line.

The new terminal, still under construction, was initially scheduled to open in February but is now expected to welcome passengers on May 15, 2019. Earlier target dates included May and October 2018.

The site’s swampy soil has caused a number of challenges for the project. Problems with a sinking sewer line and settling of portions of the tarmac required repairs and adjustments. Officials say these ground-related issues have not compromised the terminal structure itself.

“We’re not sinking into oblivion,” said New Orleans aviation board member Doug Thornton.

Repairing the sewer line and addressing related ground stabilization work contributed to the project cost rising above $1 billion. Once complete, the terminal will include 35 gates across three concourses and will feature a mix of local and national shops and restaurants for travelers.

Airport officials continue to monitor soil and infrastructure conditions as construction progresses, and they have adjusted the schedule to ensure safety and long-term stability. Despite the delays and added expense, the updated terminal is intended to improve passenger experience and increase capacity for the region.
