Minor Hotel Group is expanding its presence in Mozambique with three new properties joining its portfolio. Situated along the country’s northern coastline, these hotels will be reflagged under MHG’s Anantara and AVANI brands later this year, bringing the total number of MHG hotels in operation to 108.
The 185-room Pemba Beach Hotel & Spa will be rebranded as AVANI Pemba Beach Hotel & Spa, offering refreshed services and facilities aligned with the AVANI brand’s lifestyle positioning. In the Quirimbas Archipelago, two boutique island properties will join the Anantara portfolio: Medjumbe Private Island, featuring 13 chalets, and Matemo Island, with 24 villas. Both islands are known for their secluded settings and natural beauty, making them a fitting addition to Anantara’s luxury and wellness-focused portfolio.
These rebrandings reflect Minor Hotel Group’s confidence in Mozambique’s growing tourism market and its broader strategy to expand across Africa. Dillip Rajakarier, CEO of MHG, commented that the investment underlines the company’s commitment to the country’s tourism sector and to increasing its African footprint across multiple brands. The group is actively evaluating further opportunities to grow in the region.
The integration of these properties will likely enhance local tourism offerings by combining international brand standards with the distinctive appeal of Mozambique’s coastline and island destinations. Pemba Beach Hotel & Spa’s transition to AVANI is expected to attract travelers seeking contemporary beachfront accommodations, while Medjumbe and Matemo islands’ conversion to Anantara will position them for guests seeking luxury, privacy, and immersive island experiences.
Minor Hotel Group’s expansion in Mozambique aligns with a wider trend of international hospitality brands investing in African destinations that show strong potential for leisure and eco-tourism growth. By bringing global brand recognition together with local landscapes, these rebrands aim to elevate service levels and broaden the appeal of Mozambique to international travelers.
As these properties adopt their new identities later this year, guests can anticipate updates to amenities, service standards, and guest experiences that reflect Anantara and AVANI brand values. The move also contributes to job creation and tourism development in the region by attracting new visitor segments and encouraging longer stays in the area.
