LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B experienced significant delays after authorities evacuated part of the terminal in response to a bomb threat. The incident occurred early Saturday morning, when an altercation between a passenger and a ticket agent escalated.
According to reports, the dispute began when a man attempted to purchase a ticket from a Spirit Airlines agent. After walking away, he returned carrying a bag and reportedly claimed it contained an explosive device. He was promptly detained by law enforcement, and the airport’s bomb squad was dispatched to investigate. As a precaution, officials evacuated the Terminal B ticketing area while the situation was assessed.
Airport officials later confirmed operations resumed that morning. A Port Authority spokesperson told the Associated Press that regular service had returned by approximately 9:30 a.m., and normal activity resumed following the security sweep.
This incident follows another recent disruption at Terminal B: a partial power outage in late September that temporarily closed parts of Concourse D and affected flight operations. LaGuardia is currently undergoing a multibillion-dollar redevelopment intended to modernize facilities and enhance passenger experience; that project remains scheduled for completion in 2021.
While authorities treated the threat seriously and took immediate precautionary measures to ensure passenger safety, the swift response and coordination between airport staff and law enforcement helped limit the disruption’s duration. Travelers using Terminal B that morning were rerouted as needed, and airport operations resumed once the area was cleared and declared safe.
Incidents like this highlight the importance of robust security protocols at busy airports and the need for ongoing investments in infrastructure and emergency response capabilities. LaGuardia’s renovation aims to improve not only passenger comfort and efficiency but also the resilience of its terminals to minimize the impact of unexpected events.
