Food Festival Guide: Top Eats, Events & Where to Go

Louisiana’s upcoming food festivals promise plenty of delicious experiences and lively entertainment. In October, the World Championship Gumbo Cookoff (Oct. 10–12) transforms Iberia Parish’s Main Street into the site of a three-day celebration of Cajun and Creole cooking. About 100 competing teams prepare gumbo while visitors enjoy live music, local vendors, and a festive atmosphere that highlights regional culinary traditions.

On Nov. 1–2, Abbeville hosts its annual Giant Omelette Celebration, famous for the Omelette of Friendship made with roughly 5,000 eggs. The event mixes food-centered fun with community activities: an egg‑cracking contest using antique farm tools, an arts-and-crafts marketplace, a juried art show, historic home tours, the Cajun Challenge bicycle ride, and multiple live music performances. It’s both a culinary spectacle and a family-friendly festival showcasing local heritage.

From Dec. 5–7, the Plaquemines Parish Fair and Orange Festival celebrates the state’s abundant citrus harvests. The multi-day event features carnival rides, live music, helicopter tours, a 5K run/walk, and a variety of food-related contests such as orange peeling, catfish skinning, and duck calling. The festival emphasizes community traditions, regional produce, and outdoor fun for visitors of all ages.

Each festival offers more than food: expect regional music, local artisans, hands-on demonstrations, and activities that highlight Louisiana’s distinct culture. Whether you’re drawn by competitive cooking, a massive omelette, or citrus-themed contests, these events provide a rich taste of the state’s culinary scene and community spirit.
