The short interview captures Lennon in high spirits as he answers an art student’s questions about his songwriting approach and memories of school. The tape offers a rare, candid glimpse of Lennon during the early years of Beatlemania.
“We are delighted to have secured the highest bid for this extremely collectible ‘Lost Lennon’ tape,” said Trevor Vels, general manager of Hard Days Night Hotel. “It feels fitting that the tape has returned to Liverpool, where Beatles fans and locals can experience this rare interview.”
The recording enriches the hotel’s growing collection of Beatles memorabilia, joining photographs, artifacts and other items that celebrate the band’s cultural legacy.

“We are planning how best to showcase the full lot, which includes the recording, associated photos and the original recording machine,” Vels added. “Once arrangements are finalised we will host a celebratory reveal, but for now we are still thrilled by our win.”
Located in the heart of Liverpool’s Cavern Quarter, the four-star, 110-room Hard Days Night Hotel pays tribute to the Fab Four with Beatles artwork and memorabilia throughout the property. The hotel blends modern hospitality with immersive Beatles-themed design, creating a distinctive stay for fans and visitors.
The hotel displays exclusive Beatles artwork by internationally recognised artists such as Paul Ygartua, Julia Baird and Klaus Voormann. Walls and public spaces feature previously unseen archived photographs—some taken by Fleet Street photographer Bill Zygmant and Paul Saltzman—alongside curated Beatles objects that evoke the band’s history.

Blakes, the hotel’s signature restaurant, is named in honour of Sir Peter Blake, the artist behind the iconic Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album sleeve. The restaurant features wall-to-wall original Beatles art, including a focal display of 60 images inspired by the album’s famous collage.
Each guest room showcases an original piece by artist Shannon MacDonald, with individual artworks that reflect different moments in the Beatles’ story. Photographs spanning the 1960s to present line the hotel’s grand central staircase—from the basement to the roof—one of the property’s most striking features. Typical August room rates range from approximately $126 to $268 per night for double occupancy, depending on room type.
