Lufthansa Launches Family Check-In for Easier Group Travel

Catering to families with children up to age 12, Lufthansa now offers dedicated family check-in areas at its Frankfurt and Munich hubs.

A welcoming archway featuring Lufthansa’s mascots, Lu and Cosmo, leads to a runway-style carpet. Young passengers and their parents are guided to a kid-friendly counter where children can climb a few steps for an up-close view of the check-in process. When families receive their boarding passes, even favorite stuffed companions are included: a “Best Friend Boarding Pass” is issued for a child’s teddy bear or doll.

“Airline travel has always been an exciting experience for children,” said Jürgen Siebenrock, vice president, The Americas, Lufthansa. “Lufthansa wants to enhance that adventure by helping children and families feel especially at home when they fly with us. Our new family-focused services are designed to make flying memorable from the moment they arrive at the airport.”

This family check-in concept creates a calmer, more engaging start to travel days, reducing stress for parents and turning routine procedures into a playful experience for kids. The dedicated areas provide a clear path through check-in, with staff trained to assist families efficiently while offering a friendly, patient approach tailored to children’s needs.

Design elements such as the mascots, colorful signage and the runway-styled carpeting help orient young travelers and make the environment approachable. Small physical touches, like the step-up counters, let children participate in the process and feel involved, which can ease anxiety and encourage positive associations with flying.

Beyond the check-in counters, the program’s attention to detail — including the symbolic boarding pass for a child’s stuffed animal — reinforces the sense that families are welcome and considered throughout the journey. These gestures aim to create lasting memories and set a positive tone for the flight ahead.

By introducing family check-in zones at its primary German hubs, Lufthansa is responding to the specific needs of traveling families, streamlining logistics while adding thoughtful, child-centered elements. The initiative aligns with broader efforts across the industry to improve the passenger experience for families by combining practical support with small, imaginative touches.
