Arrival/Check-In: Arriving at Hotel Bel-Air, I crossed a charming bridge that led to reception, passing lush tropical gardens and a pond where three graceful swans—Hercules, Athena and Chloe—glided by. The setting felt like a hidden oasis in the city.
I reached the hotel at 10:45 a.m., well before the official 3 p.m. check-in, so it was unsurprising that my room was not yet ready. Hungry, I decided to eat at the hotel’s restaurant, Wolfgang Puck at Hotel Bel-Air. Seated on the terrace while waiting, I enjoyed a gourmet grilled cheese made with French Comté and Gruyère, finished with smoked caramelized onions on rustic bread. By the time I finished, the room was prepared for my arrival.
Guest Quarters: The bellman escorted me along winding paths through the hotel’s 12-acre property to my bungalow-style room nestled among the gardens. The layout of the property emphasizes privacy and tranquility, with rooms tucked into verdant nooks. In the room, the bellman demonstrated the phone’s touchscreen controls, which manage lighting and temperature and provide direct contact with hotel staff.
The room featured a king-size bed and a comfortable sitting area with a couch, an armchair, a small table and a roomy desk. An iPad was provided for guest use, loaded with information about the hotel, spa, restaurant and nearby activities, and offering web access. The bathroom was generous in size, with a double-sink vanity, a rainfall shower and heated floors—an indulgent touch. There was even a television positioned over the tub for relaxed viewing.
The bedroom’s Bang & Olufsen flat-screen HD television delivered exceptionally sharp picture quality, creating a strikingly vivid viewing experience.
Services & Amenities: Near the lobby lounge, a business center offers one PC and one Mac for guest use. La Prairie Spa, a recent addition housed in a new building, features seven treatment rooms including a suite with private outdoor space for groups. The adjacent fitness studio is well equipped with modern cardio machines, each offering USB ports, internet access and individual TVs.
The Experience: Hotel Bel-Air feels like a secluded sanctuary within Los Angeles. The meticulously maintained grounds host more than 200 species of plants and flowers, and the hotel maximizes outdoor access while preserving guest privacy. Many suites include large balconies with Jacuzzis and fireplaces for cozy evenings. Throughout my stay, staff were warm and attentive, greeting me by name with genuine smiles. It was a restorative stay, and I look forward to returning.
