By 2030, Airbnb intends to expand its alternative accommodation offerings in the Asian markets of China and India by 40 percent.
Over the past two years Airbnb has seen a strong rise in guest stays across these regions. In 2018 alone, guest numbers in China grew by 131 percent, while India recorded a 65 percent increase.
As interest grows among both domestic and international travelers, Airbnb plans to double its marketing investment in these countries. In 2018, 78 percent of Airbnb guests in India were Indian, and 91 percent of stays in China were by Chinese travelers.
Growth has been driven not only by more guests but also by more local hosts. Last year listings on Airbnb rose by 106 percent in China and by 52 percent in India. While Airbnb’s presence is clearly expanding across both markets, it faces local competition — in China from platforms such as Tujia and from companies like Oyo, which operate in both China and India.
