Airlines are increasingly offering “basic economy” fares that strip out many amenities and require travelers to pay extra for things that used to be included, such as seat selection, overhead bin access and even soft drinks. While these tickets may appear cheaper up front, the final cost can rise significantly once add-on fees are included.
The travel app Hopper has introduced a tool to help travelers see whether an unbundled fare really saves money. Called Fair Bear, this feature is part of Hopper’s price prediction app and provides a clear breakdown of additional fees so users can compare the true total cost of different ticket types.
Within the free, mobile-only app, a banner with a cartoon bear now displays the likely charges for carry-on and checked bags, seat selection, and cancellation or change policies for the flight you’re viewing. Because fees can average close to $200 on some itineraries, Hopper’s Fair Bear aims to make those extra costs more transparent.
After you choose a route, Fair Bear summarizes the bottom-line price, helping you decide whether a seemingly low fare is genuinely the best value once all ancillary fees are accounted for. This makes it easier to compare tickets and avoid surprises at checkout.
