Your Business
Essential business philosophy: Keep it simple. Our responsibility is to present a carefully curated range of quality products at fair prices, deliver excellent customer service and create a shopper-friendly environment. Dubai Duty Free also supports Dubai’s profile as a global sports, business and leisure destination through high-profile sponsorships and events, reinforcing our role as both retailer and promoter of the city.
Best way to keep a competitive edge: Constant vigilance. We continuously monitor retail offerings to identify areas for improvement, spot fast-selling items and track emerging trends so we remain ahead of the curve. Daily engagement with the retail environment and listening to frontline staff are crucial — they are our most effective brand ambassadors and a primary source of insight on customer needs and behaviors.
Yardstick of success: Sales performance is the principal measure — our turnover for this year is expected to reach $1.64 billion — but financial results are only part of the story. Equally important is ensuring that every customer leaves with a positive experience: satisfied shoppers are the foundation of sustainable success.
As a Traveler
What is the most important item you carry when traveling? My phone (a basic model) and a good book. On board, I either read or catch up on films I would otherwise miss. I usually travel on Emirates, and the in-flight entertainment system is excellent, which makes flights productive and enjoyable.
Favorite restaurant in the world: The Irish Village in Dubai, recognized by Newsweek as one of the best meeting places in the world.
Favorite destination: I enjoy exploring new places and learning from each trip. I visited New Zealand for the first time for the Rugby World Cup and was captivated by the country. A recent trip to Bhutan was also memorable for its culture and scenery. Broadening one’s horizons through travel remains a personal passion.
About Your Brand
What can travelers expect from Dubai Duty Free and what sets it apart? Travelers can expect a seamless and enjoyable shopping experience whether they are transiting, departing, or arriving at Dubai International Airport. What differentiates Dubai Duty Free is our integrated operating model: we manage the full retail operation internally, which allows us to ensure consistent staff training, deep product knowledge and uniformly high standards of service across all touchpoints.
What are the hottest items and trends at Dubai Duty Free? Technology continues to be a major draw — the latest tablets, smartphones and gadgets appeal to a global traveler base. We are careful to cater to a wide passenger mix, offering products that suit modest budgets as well as high-end luxury purchases. Collaborating with suppliers to secure travel-retail exclusives or regional firsts also helps us offer unique merchandise that excites customers and differentiates our stores.
What is the most challenging aspect of running a successful duty-free organization? Logistics and scale. We move some 71 million pieces of merchandise from our distribution center to retail outlets within Dubai International Airport. Currently 70 percent of our distribution center is automated; we are increasing automation to 90 percent in line with the opening of Concourse 3, which will serve the Emirates Airbus A380 fleet. Our retail footprint spans all three terminals, and with Concourse 3 opening, our total retail area will expand to 280,000 square feet. Managing inventory, ensuring timely replenishment, and maintaining consistent service standards across such a large operation are daily challenges that require robust systems and disciplined execution.
Dubai Duty Free’s success relies on blending scale with attention to detail: broad product selection and efficient logistics combined with staff empowered to deliver welcoming, knowledgeable service. That combination keeps us aligned with traveler expectations and helps sustain our leadership in airport retail.
