Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts has announced a significant expansion of its African portfolio by signing a management agreement with the owners of The Westcliff hotel in Johannesburg, South Africa. Perched on a cliffside garden estate in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs, the property will be relaunched as the Four Seasons Hotel Westcliff Johannesburg in the second quarter of 2014 following a comprehensive renovation.
The renovated hotel will combine the character of its historic setting with contemporary Four Seasons standards. Planned enhancements include an enlarged outdoor terrace that will take advantage of the estate’s dramatic views, a brand-new signature restaurant, a full-service spa, a modern fitness center and a refreshed outdoor pool. These upgrades are designed to appeal to both international luxury travelers and local guests seeking premium accommodation and amenities in Johannesburg.
Scott Woroch, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Development for Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, noted that Africa’s growing economies, increased political stability in many regions and easier travel have made the continent more attractive to luxury hotel brands and discerning travelers alike. “Having a property in Johannesburg — the gateway to the whole of southern Africa — is essential as we explore opportunities for growth in South Africa and across the continent,” he said. The Four Seasons presence in Johannesburg will serve as a strategic base for visitors exploring southern Africa, whether they are on business or leisure journeys.
This addition marks the latest Four Seasons hotel in sub-Saharan Africa. The company opened Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti in Tanzania in 2012, a distinctive safari property featuring 77 guestrooms, 12 suites, private plunge pools and five villas each with private swimming pools. Together, these properties reflect Four Seasons’ approach to blending luxury hospitality with strong local context and unique regional experiences.
The Westcliff site’s garden estate setting and cliffside vantage point give the hotel a distinct sense of place within Johannesburg.
