Daejeon’s Iconic Zero O’Clock Festival: What to Expect in 2026

Daejeon, South Korea, is gearing up for the return of its beloved Zero O’Clock Festival in August 2024. This year’s festival runs from August 9 to 17 and embraces a time-travel theme with distinct past, present, and future zones. Events tied to each zone take place along Jungang-ro Street, stretching from Daejeon Station to the former site of the South Chungcheong Provincial Office. To ensure a pleasant pedestrian experience, these streets will be closed to vehicles, so visitors are encouraged to use public transportation.

The festival features eight of the city’s mascot characters, who will roam the grounds and pose for photos at designated spots. Attendees can expect a packed program that includes nine large-scale street parades over nine days, a D-Culture Festival showcasing local creativity, live K-Pop performances, science and technology exhibitions, a family-friendly theme park area, and a wide variety of food and street entertainment.

Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo told The Korea Post that “the Daejeon 0 O’clock Festival is not just an event to eat and play, but a summer-night festival that revitalizes the local economy while showcasing the fun and charm of Daejeon.” The festival aims to blend entertainment with community and economic benefits, making it a highlight of the city’s summer calendar.

To accommodate the influx of visitors, train services will be increased during the festival period. Daejeon Station will receive decorative treatments and a festive makeover that emphasize the festival’s connection to rail travel. Trains will even play songs related to Daejeon to set the mood before attendees arrive. Organizers will also offer special promotions and exclusive programs for travelers.

Seeking to raise the festival’s international profile, the city invited overseas performing troupes and recruited 100 global supporters from 23 countries to help promote the event abroad. Officials have set an ambitious target of attracting 2 million visitors, up from last year’s 1.09 million attendees, by broadening the festival’s appeal and offering programs that resonate with both local and international audiences.
