Starting May 1, Austrian Airlines passengers will be allowed to use their electronic devices on board, including during takeoff and landing. This update applies to all Austrian Airlines routes and covers smartphones, tablets, notebooks, and other portable electronic devices weighing up to one kilogram (about two pounds). Once the rule takes effect, approved devices may remain switched on throughout the flight provided that all transmitting functions are disabled and the device is placed in flight mode.
The change follows updated guidance from the European Aviation Safety Agency regarding the use of portable electronic devices on aircraft. By aligning with these recommendations, Austrian Airlines aims to offer passengers greater convenience while maintaining safety standards.
Under the previous regulation, electronic devices had to be completely powered off during takeoff and landing. Although devices may now remain on in flight mode, making phone calls from the moment aircraft doors are closed until they are reopened after landing remains prohibited.
