SriLankan Airlines becomes a full member of the oneworld alliance effective May 1. As a full member, the airline will provide the full suite of oneworld services and benefits to its passengers. SriLankan is the first carrier based on the Indian subcontinent to join a global airline alliance.
To reach full membership, the national carrier of Sri Lanka underwent a rigorous readiness assessment overseen by its sponsor carrier, Cathay Pacific Airways. SriLankan’s acceptance into oneworld follows the recent inductions of TAM and US Airways in late March.
Starting May 1, members of SriLankan’s FlySmiLes loyalty program will enjoy reciprocal privileges across oneworld member airlines. FlySmiLes Platinum cardholders will be recognized with Emerald status in the oneworld network. FlySmiLes Gold members will receive Sapphire status, while FlySmiLes Classic members will correspond to oneworld Ruby. From that date, FlySmiLes Platinum and Gold members will also gain access to more than 600 airport lounges globally.
This move strengthens SriLankan’s global connectivity and benefits travelers by simplifying mileage accrual, elite recognition, and lounge access across one of the world’s largest airline alliances. For customers, the change means broader route options, coordinated schedules with partner carriers, and enhanced service consistency when flying on oneworld member airlines.
The addition of SriLankan expands oneworld’s presence in South Asia and provides new transfer and connection opportunities for passengers traveling to and from the region. Frequent flyers and occasional travelers alike will see advantages from combined networks and shared benefits, including the ability to earn and redeem miles on a wider range of routes, prioritized airport services for elite members, and streamlined customer service for alliance itineraries.
