Tour operator Natural Habitat Adventures is introducing a new itinerary to Ethiopia’s highlands starting October 2016. The 12-day nature-focused journey, Wild Ethiopia: The Roof of Africa, showcases a spectacular yet little-known region of dramatic landscapes and rare wildlife.
Departures are scheduled for Oct. 25 and Nov. 6, 2016, and Oct. 24 and Nov. 5, 2017. Pricing starts at $7,795 per person, double occupancy. That price covers accommodations; all meals from dinner on arrival through dinner on departure day; non-alcoholic beverages with meals and in vehicles; the services of a Nat Hab Expedition Leader, local guides and lodge staff; select gratuities; airport transfers on the first and last day; permits and entrance fees; and all taxes. Domestic airfare within Ethiopia, estimated at approximately $500, is not included in the base price.
The itinerary explores alpine moorlands and high grasslands, volcanic peaks and deep gorges through a mix of vehicle-supported travel and guided walks. Highlights include opportunities to see endemic and rare species, visits to ancient monuments and early churches, and explorations of historic ruins. Accommodations emphasize local character, with nights spent in small boutique lodges such as the thatch-roofed Simien Lodge, a traditional cluster of brick and wattle dwellings located in Simien Mountains National Park.
Throughout the trip, guests experience Ethiopia’s varied terrain and cultural heritage while traveling with experienced naturalists and local guides. The program begins and ends in Addis Ababa, allowing time for arrival and departure logistics as well as brief city orientation as needed.
This new departure provides a focused opportunity to visit Ethiopia’s highland ecosystems and cultural sites in a carefully curated small-group format, blending wildlife viewing, scenic drives, and accessible hikes across one of Africa’s most striking and under-visited regions.
