2013 Hall of Fame Inductees and Highlights

December 2013 marks the 10th anniversary of Global Traveler’s GT Tested Reader Survey awards — our annual roundup of the best in travel as voted by our readers, a community of experienced travelers who understand the nuances of the industry. These readers average more than 30 round‑trip international and domestic flights per year in premium cabins and frequently stay at four‑ and five‑star hotels, making them especially qualified to select the top performers across airlines, hotels, frequent‑flyer programs and travel services.

Over the past decade, six companies have consistently stood out to our readers. To honor sustained excellence, Global Traveler introduces the 10‑Year Hall of Fame, recognizing winners that have claimed the same GT Tested Reader Survey award for 10 consecutive years. These honorees represent the very best in service, innovation and reliability.

Best Airline in the World — Singapore Airlines has earned this title for the 10th consecutive year. A favorite among trans‑Pacific and international travelers, the carrier recently introduced a next generation of cabin products on the London–Singapore route. The updated first‑class suite offers enhanced privacy and comfort with a 35‑inch‑wide seat, a padded headrest and a 24‑inch LCD screen. The redesigned business class features additional lounging positions and is promoted as offering one of the widest full‑flat beds in the industry. These continuous investments in the passenger experience position Singapore Airlines for continued recognition.

Asiana Airlines is a double inductee into this year’s Hall of Fame, honored as both Best Airline for Onboard Service and Best Airline for Flight Attendants for 10 straight years. Passengers regularly praise Asiana’s staff for hospitality and attentiveness that exceed expectations, a standard supported by comprehensive training and a culture focused on service excellence. Maintaining that level of consistency has become a defining characteristic of the airline.

Best Frequent‑Flyer Program — United’s MileagePlus has remained a favorite with our readers through many changes, including the carrier’s merger and program evolution. MileagePlus members can earn miles across travel, retail and home services, and redeem them for flights, shopping, dining and other rewards. The program offers seating benefits, upgrades, mileage bonuses, priority services and tiered benefits that reward loyal travelers, ensuring its place among top frequent‑flyer offerings.

Best Airline in Africa — For service across the African continent, readers selected South African Airways (SAA) as the top carrier for the 10th year. Recent achievements underscore the airline’s position: high on‑time performance rankings, new and expanded codeshare partnerships and ongoing network development. Those industry milestones, combined with consistent operational execution, make SAA a repeat favorite.

Best Airport in North America — Chicago O’Hare International Airport is the preferred North American hub among our readership, winning Best Airport in North America for a decade. As a major hub for United, O’Hare handles substantial traffic and seasonal challenges while continuing to improve passenger experience through dedicated staff, strong facilities and notable dining and retail options. Recent infrastructure projects, including a new runway and a large cargo center, signal ongoing investment that will further enhance the airport’s capabilities.

Best Hotel Chain in Latin America — Sheraton Hotels & Resorts has been named Best Hotel Chain in Latin America for 10 years. As Starwood’s largest and most global brand, Sheraton operates more than 400 properties worldwide, and its Latin American portfolio is a standout. Recent openings like Sheraton Tucumán in Argentina and Sheraton San José reflect the brand’s regional growth. With more than 30 hotels across 12 countries in Latin America, Sheraton remains a leading option for travelers to the region.

Each year brings new leaders who may join this exclusive group. A win in 2014 would add Air Canada and InterContinental Hotels Group’s IHG Rewards Club (formerly Priority Club Rewards) to the Hall of Fame alongside Singapore Airlines, Asiana Airlines, United MileagePlus, South African Airways, Chicago O’Hare and Sheraton Hotels & Resorts.

As we celebrate a decade of reader‑driven recognition, we honor the partners who have helped define high standards in travel. We look forward to another decade of innovation, service and memorable travel experiences.
