Top Large U.S. Airports: What Travelers Need to Know

The Wall Street Journal ranked the largest airports in the United States and named Denver International Airport the top performer.

For its ranking of the 20 biggest U.S. airports by size, the newspaper evaluated a variety of metrics, including WiFi speeds, Yelp ratings for airport restaurants, rideshare fares to nearby convention centers, and security-line wait times. Denver claimed first place, followed by Orlando (MCO), Phoenix (PHX), Atlanta (ATL), and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).

The assessment also considered reliability, value, and convenience. Phoenix scored highest for reliability, Orlando led on value, and Dallas-Fort Worth topped the convenience category.

New York’s three major airports — LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy International, and Newark Liberty International (EWR) — ranked at the bottom of the list, with issues cited such as delays, cancellations, high fares, and lower-rated dining options.

The report highlighted investments and initiatives that helped the top five airports stand out. Denver, Phoenix, and Orlando have all committed significant funds to renovation and construction projects to modernize facilities. Orlando has focused on frontline service, encouraging employees to maintain eye contact and productivity and offering rewards for strong customer service behaviors. Atlanta upgraded its WiFi network and earns praise for clean, modern amenities and diverse food choices. Dallas-Fort Worth ranks highly for efficient TSA processing, updated terminals, ample dining options, and well-maintained restrooms.

Overall, the Wall Street Journal’s ranking emphasizes a mix of technological improvements, customer service practices, and facility upgrades as key drivers of passenger satisfaction — factors that helped Denver and the other top-ranked airports distinguish themselves from peers that continue to struggle with delays, costs, and aging infrastructure.
