Stay at Hotel Burnham in Chicago: Historic Luxury Near Millennium Park

Arrival/Check-in: I arrived in Chicago, a city I’ve visited many times, but on this trip I stayed in a boutique hotel in The Loop and theater district at Washington and State Streets rather than a large, traditional property. The lobby is small but intimate and attractive, with a compact front desk beside the elevators and an adjoining restaurant. Check-in was quick and efficient, and the staff were professional and friendly. Although bellmen were present, no one offered assistance with luggage or directions to my room. (28/30)

Guest Quarters: The hotel occupies an architecturally significant building, originally constructed in 1895 as the Reliance Building. Its glass-and-steel façade and distinctive interior—marble columns, terrazzo floors and well-crafted steel elevators—create a memorable atmosphere. My room was cozy and comfortable and included all the expected amenities. The bed was very comfortable and a pillow menu let me select my preferred option. The room also featured a desk, a separate living area, an honor bar, two televisions, a CD player and expansive windows with a pleasant view. A courtesy bottle of sparkling wine, chocolates and fresh fruit were delivered to the room. The hotel offers WiFi throughout. (30/30)

Services/Amenities: As part of the Kimpton Hotels group, the property provides a range of services for a comfortable stay: a 24/7 fitness center, in-room spa treatments and attentive evening wine service, along with morning coffee in the lobby. The on-site restaurant, Atwood Café, is conveniently located adjacent to the lobby and is popular with guests and locals alike. The hotel is also well equipped to accommodate families and guests traveling with pets. Note that there is no pool or full-service spa. (39/40)

The Experience: Overall, I felt very comfortable and enjoyed my room. Relaxing with a drink in the living area before heading out for dinner was pleasant, and the opportunity to return to the lobby for a glass of wine and conversation with other guests added to the experience. Simple conveniences—such as being able to hop in the elevator to grab a coffee—enhanced the stay. The building itself is an architectural treasure and the location is excellent, just a few blocks from the Chicago River, Michigan Avenue and Millennium Park. I would happily stay at the Hotel Burnham again.
