Singapore Airlines Introduces New Premium Cabins on Christchurch Routes

Singapore Airlines will commence Airbus A350-900 operations on the Christchurch route starting in January. The introduction of the A350-900 brings a refreshed cabin layout, including a dedicated premium-economy cabin and updated business-class seating designed to enhance passenger comfort and onboard experience.

Until the change, the Christchurch service has been operated daily with a Boeing 777-200ER. That aircraft featured the airline’s older business-class seat, which is wider than the new A350 seat. The switch to the A350-900 represents a notable cabin reconfiguration and broader product offering for travelers between Singapore and Christchurch.

Comparing the two aircraft, the A350-900 business-class seat measures approximately 28 inches in width, compared with about 34 inches on the Boeing 777-200ER. Despite the narrower width, the A350 business seat provides a longer pitch, increasing to about 78 inches versus roughly 76 inches on the 777. Both seat types are fully lie-flat and arranged in a 1-2-1 layout, ensuring direct aisle access from every seat.

Beyond the raw dimensions, the A350 seats have been noted for improved ergonomics, higher-quality materials and more efficient use of cabin space. These refinements aim to deliver a more restful and refined experience in business class, with modern finishes and updated cushioning that better support long-haul travel.

One of the most significant additions with the A350-900 is the introduction of a premium-economy cabin on this route. The two-class Boeing 777-200ER did not include a premium-economy option, so passengers who prefer extra space and amenities between economy and business will have a new choice. Premium-economy typically offers greater seat recline, wider seats, increased legroom, upgraded meal service and enhanced amenity kits compared with standard economy—features that are likely to appeal to leisure and business travelers seeking extra comfort without the full cost of business class.

The A350’s cabin layout is designed to balance capacity and comfort across all travel classes. The aircraft’s overall cabin architecture and newer fittings allow airlines to incorporate distinct product classes—such as premium economy—while maintaining efficient boarding and service flows. For passengers on the Christchurch route, this means a broader range of fare and comfort options when booking flights beginning in January.

Daily frequency remains unchanged with the introduction of the A350-900, so travelers can expect the same timetable while benefiting from upgraded onboard products. Frequent flyers and occasional travelers alike will now find a refreshed onboard environment, with business-class passengers enjoying updated lie-flat seats and all travelers gaining the optional step-up to premium economy.

In short, the A350-900 will bring a modernized cabin experience to the Singapore–Christchurch route: a premium-economy cabin that was previously unavailable on the two-class 777-200ER, new business-class seats that trade some width for longer pitch and improved materials, and the overall comforts associated with a newer aircraft type. These changes reflect an effort to enhance passenger choice and in-flight comfort while preserving the route’s daily service.
