London Introduces All-Night Tube Service: Night Tube Starts Soon

Londoners will soon benefit from 24-hour Tube services on two lines, a long-awaited improvement scheduled to begin on August 19. Mayor Sadiq Khan described the Night Tube as essential to supporting and expanding London’s night-time economy, creating jobs and opportunities across the city. He emphasized that earlier delays under the previous administration had disappointed residents and that restarting the project was a priority for his office.

The Night Tube had originally been planned to launch last year, but talks between the city and rail unions over pay and working conditions stalled progress and caused strikes and service interruptions. After reaching an agreement, the program is set to begin with weekend-only all-night services on the Central and Victoria lines starting August 19.

Additional lines will follow in phases. The Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines are scheduled to receive all-night service later in the autumn as newly recruited drivers complete training. Transport authorities report that around 200 part-time drivers are currently enrolled in the 14-week training program to staff the expanded service.

The phased rollout aims to ensure reliable, safe operations while scaling up staffing and infrastructure. Running trains throughout the night is expected to support businesses that operate later hours, improve late-night travel options for workers and leisure travelers, and reduce reliance on overnight buses or private cars.

Transport for London and city officials are coordinating operational plans, safety checks and staffing timelines to make the transition smooth. Weekend-only night services at first will allow teams to monitor performance and adjust schedules or resources before full weekday operations are considered.

For many Londoners, the Night Tube will mean greater flexibility for commuting and socializing, safer journeys late at night, and better connections across the network during overnight hours. The stepwise approach — launching on two central lines and adding further routes after training is complete — is intended to balance punctual implementation with careful management of staffing and passenger needs.

The introduction of the Night Tube represents a significant change for the capital’s transport network, offering continuous rail access on key corridors and supporting the city’s wider economic and social activities during nighttime hours.
