San Francisco Festival Season: Top Events & Dates to Know

A free summer concert series at Sigmund Stern Grove in San Francisco returns this year with a lineup of diverse artists, opening with a double bill featuring R&B and soul favorites Peabo Bryson and Jeffrey Osborn. The season runs from June 17 through August 19 and takes place on the grove’s beautiful 70-acre site, which includes a fragrant eucalyptus forest.

Founded in 1938, Stern Grove has long been a community focal point for free, high-quality outdoor music. The full concert schedule is available from the grove’s official sources; highlights this season include:

June 24: Grammy- and Emmy-winning singer, songwriter, producer and humanitarian Ziggy Marley, joined by Brazilian singer Flavia Coelho.

July 1: Merge Records artist M. Ward, accompanied by the lively, foot-tapping songs of Thao & The Get Down Stay Down.

July 8: A set from The Mexican Institute of Sound, featuring GINKGOA, a collaborative duo composed of Nicolle Rochelle and Antoine Chatenet.

July 22: The San Francisco Symphony will perform at Stern Grove, with a pre-concert Artist Talk held at the Trocadero Clubhouse at noon on the day of the show.

July 29: The San Francisco Ballet presents a program of selections from its current repertory, led by artistic director Helgi Tomasson.

Performances at Stern Grove offer a mix of genres and family-friendly appeal, from reggae and world music to indie folk, electronic-inspired projects, classical orchestral programs and ballet. Attendees can expect a relaxed outdoor atmosphere, picnic-friendly grounds and performances that showcase both internationally known names and unique collaborative acts.

When planning to attend, check the grove’s official announcements for updates on schedules, times and any site-specific guidelines such as permitted items, arrival recommendations and accessibility information. Stern Grove events are free, and many visitors arrive early to claim a good spot on the hillside and enjoy the natural setting before the show begins.
