ARRIVAL/CHECK-IN: My husband and I spent the final stop of our honeymoon on the island of Madeira, Portugal. From Cristiano Ronaldo Airport we took a 20-minute taxi to the Pestana Carlton Madeira. The hotel’s exterior is expansive and landscaped with palm trees and lush tropical plants. Inside, the lobby has a modern beach-inspired design with tan and cream seating, exotic floral arrangements and a striking amber chandelier. Despite arriving during a busy period, check-in was prompt and the staff were attentive.

GUEST QUARTERS: The hotel sits on a cliff with sweeping views of the Atlantic, and our suite made the most of that location. It featured a living room and dining area, followed by a bedroom with a king-sized bed and a small office nook—ideal for anyone who needs to work while enjoying an ocean view. Housekeeping added thoughtful touches each day, arranging towels into shapes such as fish and swans, and leaving fresh flowers and chocolates.
The décor favored muted earth tones and a mix of dark and light wood furnishings. Our balcony was generously sized and furnished with comfortable wicker seating. Room amenities included a stocked mini bar, complimentary Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV with satellite channels and a tea/coffee station. The marble bathroom was spacious, with a freestanding bathtub and a separate shower offering very good water pressure. There was also a private toilet and bidet alcove and a double vanity with large mirrors. We unpacked and relaxed on the balcony with the complimentary Champagne, fruit and cookie platter that awaited us.
SERVICES/AMENITIES: Located in a peaceful part of town, the hotel is within walking distance of Funchal’s main downtown area. Nearby are numerous small restaurants, plus the hotel itself has four dining options. The Taverna Grill serves traditional Portuguese dishes in a rustic setting. The Pub is a casual spot for a pint and bar food while watching football. Arcos Restaurant provides an ample breakfast buffet and alfresco dining on an ocean-view terrace. For a lighter meal or a poolside drink, the Garden Restaurant and Bar serves lunch next to two outdoor pools.
Beyond dining, the hotel offers a range of activities. Certified scuba classes are available on-site, followed by guided scuba tours. Guests also have access to a full gym, game room, tennis court, mini golf, a library, The Venus Spa and a hair salon—so there are options for relaxation and recreation.
