Delta Air Lines unveiled a new uniform collection last month, created by New York designer Zac Posen in collaboration with Delta employees. The collection reflects input from more than 60,000 frontline staff — including customer service agents, flight attendants, ramp agents and technicians — who will wear the updated looks.
On its website, Delta described the collection as a “contemporary line (that) fuses together bold color palettes and classic styles, while paying homage to the heritage and iconic design from decades past to elevate the look and brand of Delta employees.” The goal is a professional, modern appearance that also acknowledges the airline’s long design tradition.
“The world’s best employees deserve the best uniforms and this new collection is classically influenced, yet modern,” said Ed Bastian, CEO of Delta Air Lines. He noted that Zac Posen and the Delta team collaborated closely with employees to develop timeless, fashionable pieces that reflect Delta’s thoughtful and innovative spirit. Early feedback indicated Posen’s design sense and hands-on involvement helped shape a uniform that aims to distinguish Delta’s brand.
The rollout will be phased rather than immediate. Beginning in early 2017, a group of 1,000 employees will wear-test the pieces so the company can gather real-world feedback. Based on that input, Delta plans to refine the garments before final production and a broader deployment. The full worldwide rollout is expected in early 2018.
Delta’s approach emphasizes employee participation and iterative refinement: testing the uniforms in daily operations, collecting suggestions, making adjustments, and then scaling production. That process is intended to ensure comfort, durability and practicality across roles while maintaining a cohesive visual identity for the airline.
The collection focuses on combining classic tailoring with contemporary elements, including varied color palettes and functional features designed for long shifts and diverse work environments. By involving frontline staff in the design process, Delta aims to produce uniforms that meet the demands of different job functions while presenting a unified, professional image to customers.
Overall, the new uniform initiative represents Delta’s effort to update its visual brand and improve employee experience through thoughtfully designed apparel. With staged testing and a global rollout timeline, the airline is positioning the new collection to be both stylish and practical for the many employees who wear it every day.
