KLM Launches New Routes to Windhoek and Tehran

This month KLM will expand its network from mainland Europe to include two destinations that are returning to the airline’s schedule: Windhoek, Namibia, and Tehran, Iran. The Amsterdam-based airline will reinstate service to these cities as improving international relations and renewed traveler interest make them viable additions to its global route map.

Service to Tehran (IKA) resumes on October 30. KLM originally began flying to Tehran in 1991 but suspended the route in 2013 amid strained relations between Iran and several Western countries. Growing interest in travel to Iran from European and North American passengers, along with a calmer diplomatic climate, has prompted the airline to restore the link. The relaunch increases KLM’s Middle East network to nine cities and provides new options for passengers seeking cultural and historical experiences in the region.

KLM is also reintroducing flights to Windhoek (WDH), the capital of Namibia. Initially, the service will operate via a connection in Luanda, Angola, for the first few months. The route will run three times weekly, giving European travelers access to Namibia’s popular ecotourism lodges, dramatic deserts, and wildlife excursions. Tourism forecasts for Namibia indicate continued growth, supporting demand for more international connections.

Both route restarts reflect broader trends in aviation and travel: airlines are responding to shifting diplomatic conditions and rising consumer interest by restoring links that were previously suspended. For travelers, the expanded schedule offers more straightforward connections from Europe to destinations that combine cultural attractions, natural landscapes and outdoor activities. KLM’s decision to bring back Tehran and Windhoek underscores the airline’s focus on meeting evolving passenger demand while strengthening its long-haul network.

Operational details such as exact flight times, fares and booking availability will be published by KLM through its official channels. Passengers planning travel to these cities should check entry requirements and travel advisories for their destinations before booking, and consider seasonal weather and local conditions when planning itineraries.
