Vancouver Festival Lineup Guide: Top Acts & Events This Season

The Vancouver International Film Festival is still underway across the city, presenting more than 300 films from 76 countries. In addition to screenings, the festival offers workshops, filmmaker talks and special events, and runs until Oct. 13.

Following the film festival, the UBC Botanical Garden hosts the Apple Festival on Oct. 14–15. Now in its 26th year, the festival includes an apple tasting tent, educational displays, family activities and storytelling in the Children’s Area. Attendees can watch cider-pressing and grafting demonstrations and join discussions led by Master Gardeners about apple growing and fruit tree care.

The Vancouver International Writers Festival takes place on Granville Island from Oct. 16–22. More than 110 local and international authors will participate, including award-winning and notable writers such as Diego Enrique Osorno, Margaret Atwood, Barbara Gowdy, Dean Atta and Nicola Lagioia. The program features readings, conversations and panel discussions covering a wide range of literary topics.

From Nov. 2–8, the city hosts ISCM World New Music Days, presented by the International Society for Contemporary Music. The festival brings together artists from nearly 50 countries and offers more than 25 concerts showcasing Canadian and international contemporary music. Highlights include a joint presentation featuring The National Arts Centre Orchestra of Ottawa, conducted by Alexander Shelley, in collaboration with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

The Vancouver Tea Festival follows on Nov. 4–5, organized by the Vancouver Tea Society and hosted at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in partnership with the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Vancouver. The event features a tea marketplace, workshops, tastings and presentations centered on tea culture and preparation.
