Kilkenny Arts Festival: 10 Days of Contemporary Art Events

From Aug. 5–14, the 43rd Annual Kilkenny Arts Festival brings together visual artists, musicians, writers and performers to the green expanses of Ireland’s heritage capital. Set against the city’s medieval architecture and riverside, this year’s program includes actor Stephen Rea reading Seamus Heaney’s Aeneid: Book VI, live theater such as The Curious Scrapbook of Josephine Bean, and readings by Poet in Residence Paul Muldoon.

The festival’s central theme, Mozart: Prince of Music, features a broad range of performances: pianist Christian Blackshaw presenting the Complete Piano Sonatas; the Irish Chamber Orchestra under Gábor Takács-Nagy performing Mozart’s Late Symphonies; tenor John Mark Ainsley in selections from Idomeneo; and Malcolm Proud’s unique presentation, Music for Clockwork & Glass, showcasing pieces Mozart composed for the glass organ and mechanical clockwork organ.

Alongside these headline concerts, the program offers poetry workshops, folk and jazz concerts, and panel discussions. Highlights include In Search of the Irish Dreamtime, a lecture by Professor J.P. Mallory exploring Irish myths and traditions; the European debut of Loudon Wainwright III’s one-man show Surviving Twin; and live painting sessions with artist Mick O’Dea capturing festival performers at James Stephens Barracks.

Family-friendly and immersive experiences feature throughout the festival. Castle Park hosts inflatable art by the Architects of Air with their installation Katena. The surrounding forest becomes a dramatic setting for a torch-lit performance of Behind the Dark, a fusion of dance and acrobatics by Loosysmokes. Secret Garden Music presents pop-up concerts and surprise performances in historic green spaces across the city, including Castle Yard, Rothe House Garden, Black Abbey Garden and Castle Rose Garden.

With so much on offer, the festival encourages visitors to plan in advance. A full schedule and ticket information are available on the official Kilkenny Arts Festival website, where you can review events, times and venues to build the best itinerary for your visit.

Aug. 5–14 marks a celebration of music, literature, visual art and performance in Kilkenny — a compact, walkable festival that showcases Ireland’s cultural heritage while offering contemporary and experimental works for audiences of all ages.
