Norwegian Airlines Expands U.S.–Europe Routes in 2018

With a sharp expansion of transatlantic services over the past year, Norwegian Air has quietly become a top choice for budget-conscious international travelers. This year the low-cost carrier is adding 11 new routes to connect its growing customer bases across Europe and North America.

Starting this summer, Norwegian will operate non-stop flights from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Amsterdam (AMS), Madrid (MAD) and Milan (MXP). The Los Angeles–Milan route will be the only non-stop connection between those two cities when it launches, and Norwegian will be the sole carrier offering year-round non-stop service between Los Angeles and both Madrid and Milan.

Introductory fares are competitive: one-way tickets from Los Angeles to Madrid and Milan will begin at $229. From New York, non-stop fares will start at $199 to Amsterdam and $229 to Madrid. These base fares cover taxes and a seat; checked baggage, in-flight meals and other optional services are available for purchase separately, following the carrier’s à la carte model.

These additions build on Norwegian’s recent strategy of expanding affordable transatlantic options while focusing on direct, point-to-point flying. For travelers prioritizing low base fares and straightforward routes, the new schedule increases convenient choices for both leisure and business trips between major West Coast and East Coast U.S. gateways and important European hubs.

Passengers considering these routes should review fare conditions carefully. Low-cost carriers typically separate the base fare from extras, so the final price depends on baggage allowance, seat selection, onboard amenities and any changes or refunds. Booking early often yields the best introductory fares, while flexibility with travel dates can help secure lower prices.

As Norwegian scales up its transatlantic network, the airline’s focus on direct flights and competitive pricing is likely to keep pressure on legacy carriers to offer more value on similar city pairs. Travelers looking for simple, no-frills crossings between North America and Europe now have more non-stop options, notably the unique Los Angeles–Milan service and expanded year-round links from Los Angeles to Madrid and Milan.
