Ride-Hailing at Sea-Tac: Uber and Lyft Approved to Operate

Many airports prohibit ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft from operating on airport property because of existing agreements with local taxi companies. While drivers for these services sometimes enter drop-off or pick-up zones, they often do so at their own risk. Recently, however, Uber and Lyft began a one-year pilot program at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport with the Port of Seattle’s approval.

Under the pilot, UberX and UberPOOL drivers are authorized to pick up passengers on the third floor of the airport parking garage. Clear signage directs riders to the designated pickup area, and passengers using these services pay an additional $5 airport fee in addition to the standard fare. Uber Black vehicles continue to pick up on the arrivals deck, but drivers must hold the proper airport licensing to do so. Wingz, a pre-booked ride service, also launched operations at Sea-Tac as part of this change.

Airports across the country are gradually adjusting their policies toward ride-hailing companies, but rules and procedures vary by location. Some airports have formal agreements and dedicated pickup points, while others restrict access entirely or permit only licensed-for-hire vehicles. Travelers should check airport-specific guidance before planning a ride-hail pickup or drop-off.

For those researching which airports allow ride-hailing and the specific procedures at each facility, there are resources that list current airport regulations and step-by-step instructions for pickups and drop-offs. These guides can help passengers understand any additional fees, required pickup locations, and licensing requirements for drivers at individual airports.

As ride-hailing continues to grow in popularity, expect airports to keep evolving their policies to balance passenger convenience, traffic flow, and agreements with ground-transportation providers. Passengers planning to use Uber, Lyft, or other similar services should look for posted signs at arrival areas, confirm pickup locations in their app, and be aware of any extra airport surcharges or licensing requirements that might apply.
