United Airlines Adds New Aircraft to Flight Schedules This Summer

United Airlines has added the Boeing 737 MAX 9 to its domestic route network. The airline introduced the aircraft into service on June 7, initially deploying it on routes from Houston (IAH) to multiple domestic destinations. Beginning June 29, United expanded MAX 9 operations to include additional flights from Los Angeles (LAX).

The MAX 9 will serve a mix of markets, connecting Houston with Anchorage (ANC), Austin (AUS), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Orlando (MCO), Sacramento (SMF), Tampa (TPA), Los Angeles and San Diego (SAN). From Los Angeles, the type will also operate flights to Honolulu (HNL). These deployments reflect United’s strategy to modernize its fleet while matching capacity to demand across domestic and transpacific leisure routes.

United highlights the MAX 9’s fuel efficiency and advanced systems as central benefits. According to the airline, the aircraft delivers lower fuel burn and reduced maintenance costs compared with older narrowbody models, which helps improve operational efficiency and lower environmental impact per seat. United’s finance leadership notes the aircraft contributes to the airline’s broader goals of improving productivity and cost performance while enhancing the customer experience.

The Boeing 737 MAX 9 in United’s configuration offers 179 seats overall. The cabin layout includes 20 seats in United First arranged 2-2, 48 Economy Plus seats in a 3-3 arrangement, and 111 standard economy seats. Every seat is equipped with a power outlet to support personal electronics. WiFi on board is provided via satellite service; however, complimentary access is not offered.

United’s First cabin on the MAX 9 features an updated seat design intended to increase comfort and functionality. The new United First seat includes a contoured two-tone leather finish, an adjustable headrest with enhanced padding, and convenient storage options such as in-arm laptop slots and a beverage console. Double seatback pockets add stowage capacity for personal items. The redesigned tray table incorporates a holder for mobile devices and an AC power plug, and a small granite-style cocktail table appears in the center console, improving the onboard experience for passengers seated in First.

In Economy Plus and Economy, the MAX 9 maintains a standard 3-3 seating arrangement designed for efficient boarding and deplaning on short- and medium-haul routes. Economy Plus offers additional legroom compared with standard economy, aimed at travelers who prioritize space for comfort on longer domestic segments. All cabins include the power access mentioned earlier, accommodating the increasing need for passengers to keep devices charged while traveling.

The introduction of the MAX 9 also allows United to phase in aircraft with newer systems and cabin features across its domestic network. By deploying the MAX 9 on both business- and leisure-oriented routes, the airline can more effectively match seat capacity and amenities to passenger expectations while reducing the per-seat operating cost. The greater fuel efficiency and lower maintenance profile of the MAX 9 are intended to support United’s operational reliability and sustainability objectives as the airline continues to update its fleet.

United’s rollout plan for the MAX 9 emphasizes a gradual expansion of service. Operations began from Houston to a set of initial destinations on June 7, followed by additional Los Angeles deployments starting June 29. As the aircraft integrates into the schedule, travelers can expect to see the MAX 9 on a combination of domestic and transpacific leisure routes operated out of those two hubs. Flight schedules and aircraft assignments are subject to change based on seasonal demand and operational needs, as is typical in airline network planning.

The MAX 9’s cabin and seating choices reflect United’s approach to offering a range of product tiers—First, Economy Plus and Economy—that balance comfort and value. With power at every seat and an upgraded First product, the aircraft aims to improve the passenger experience on routes where it is deployed. Travelers interested in specific amenities or seat maps should consult their booking details for the most accurate, up-to-date information about the aircraft scheduled for their flight.
