Stay at La Raia: Private Italian Mansion and Working Winery

Looking for luxury in Italy’s Southern Piedmont? In the wine hills of Gavi, north and west of Genoa, Locanda La Raia offers ten beautifully appointed guestrooms and two private apartments on a 180-hectare estate. Once a countryside inn and post station for travelers on horseback, the property has been carefully restored by the Rossi Cairo family, preserving original features such as vaulted ceilings and exposed brickwork. Each room is individually decorated and features large windows that frame the estate’s gardens, rolling meadows and organic vineyards.

The estate’s gardens play a leading role at aró, the new restaurant led by Michelin-starred chef Tommaso Arrigoni. With the hotel’s spring reopening, the menu highlights estate-grown ingredients—beef, honey, herbs and grains—crafted into seasonal dishes. The wine list showcases several acclaimed local selections, including three Gavi D.O.C.G. labels (Gavi, Gavi Riserva Vigna della Madonnina and Gavi Pisé) alongside Piemonte D.O.C. Barberas.

The wine cellar was constructed using an eco-friendly technique known as pies, overseen by Austrian architect Martin Rauch, a leading expert in this traditional building method. The cellar complements the estate’s sustainable approach to viticulture and hospitality.

Guests can wander The Art Path, a curated trail of sculptures and installations scattered across the grounds, or unwind in the spa, which offers a sauna, steam bath, heated indoor pool and outdoor pool. Spa services include a range of massages—such as the 90-minute Locanda La Raia Signature Massage and the 90-minute Antique Massage with Organic Body Scrub—plus other wellness treatments. A modern, fully equipped gym overlooks the gardens, allowing for scenic workouts.

Whether you seek culinary refinement, quiet relaxation or an immersive countryside escape, Locanda La Raia blends historic charm with modern comforts, all set amid the scenic vineyards of Gavi.
