JetBlue announced last week that it will become the first U.S. airline to offer complimentary high-speed WiFi on every aircraft.
The free onboard WiFi lets domestic passengers stream video, browse the web, use messaging apps, and connect multiple devices. Travelers can shop on Amazon while earning JetBlue TrueBlue points for purchases made in-flight. In addition to high-speed internet, JetBlue continues to provide live TV and satellite radio across its fleet.
Passengers can access WiFi as soon as they board, without waiting for the aircraft to reach cruising altitude, making it easier to start work, browse, or stream right away.
“It’s 2017 and our customers expect to be connected to everything, whether that be from the comfort of their sofa or 35,000 feet above it,” said Jamie Perry, vice president at JetBlue. “That’s why we’re proud to be the only airline offering free, high-speed WiFi, live TV and movies for all customers on every plane.”
FlyFi is not entirely new; the service launched in December 2013 and has been gradually expanded since. JetBlue recently completed installations of FlyFi across more than 200 aircraft, including Airbus A320s, A321s, and Embraer 190s. The service is currently available over the contiguous United States.
By contrast, several major carriers continue to charge for in-flight internet. Competitors such as American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Southwest Airlines currently offer WiFi as a paid add-on.
