Magnificent Mile Makeover: What’s Changing on Chicago’s Iconic Street

InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile, located on Chicago’s famous shopping avenue, has announced its largest renovation to date, scheduled for completion by June.

“In many ways we are waking a sleeping giant,” said Chris Cawley, general manager, InterContinental Magnificent Mile. “This has always been an exceptional property in so many ways, and our stunning, newly refreshed Grand Tower guest rooms will be the final finishing touch.”

The hotel’s Grand Tower, which contains 477 guestrooms, will debut a complete transformation that blends its Moorish-influenced heritage with contemporary luxury. The redesign draws on the building’s history as the Medinah Athletic Club. KTGY Simeone Deary Design Group crafted a Mediterranean palette that weaves Moorish, Greek, Turkish, Persian and Celtic influences into a cohesive, elegant aesthetic. The property’s ornate 1929 architecture, including three large relief carvings inspired by ancient Assyrian motifs, remains a focal point complemented by updated interiors.

Guestroom upgrades emphasize modern comfort and functionality: reimagined minibars, dedicated remote-work setups, and full-length armoires that replace traditional closet spaces. These changes aim to enhance both short stays and extended visits while respecting the building’s historic character.

“We cannot wait to share the latest chapter of the hotel’s story with our guests, clients, and team,” said Alexandra LaLoggia, director of sales and marketing, InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile. “InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile has so much to offer: beautifully restored 1920s event spaces, a spa featuring a junior-size Olympic swimming pool, a world-renowned steakhouse, and now, a brand-new look to our Grand Tower that will rival the city’s best accommodations.”

The renovation is positioned to elevate the hotel’s appeal for leisure and business travelers alike, enhancing amenities while preserving defining historic details. By merging period architectural features with contemporary hospitality standards, the InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile aims to offer a refreshed experience that honors its past and meets modern guest expectations.

As the project nears completion, the property anticipates renewed interest from local and international visitors seeking both the convenience of a central Magnificent Mile location and the character of a landmark hotel that has been carefully updated for today’s travelers.
