For 28 years the Berlin Wall separated east and west Berlin—and, by extension, divided Germany. The wall finally fell in November 1989, and the city is marking the 30th anniversary with a series of events and commemorations.
Whether your family enjoys museums, music, street festivals or public art, there are activities taking place across Berlin this year and in the months ahead.
The most prominent and historically significant program is a weeklong festival running Nov. 4–10. In what city officials describe as the largest celebration Berlin has staged for this occasion, the public realm will become an open-air exhibition of art and historical displays.
Throughout the week, large-format historical photographs and archival films will be shown at multiple locations. Several sites will recreate elements of the night the wall fell, allowing visitors to engage with the atmosphere and stories of the “peaceful revolution.”
On Nov. 9 dozens of musicians will perform across the city as the weeklong program concludes with a major public gathering commemorating the 30th anniversary. For visitors who prefer quieter experiences, Berlin offers many alternative ways to reflect on the past and enjoy the present.
2019 is also a notable year for another cultural milestone: the Bauhaus centenary. Although the Bauhaus school was closed by the National Socialists in 1933, its fourteen years of activity had a profound influence on art, design and architecture. A range of exhibitions, lectures and special projects are scheduled throughout the year to honor the centenary and explore the movement’s legacy.
With exhibitions, performances and historical installations spread across museums, public squares and cultural venues, Berlin’s anniversary programming is designed to balance remembrance with celebration. Visitors can combine museum visits with free outdoor displays, live music and site-based storytelling to build a deeper understanding of recent German history while enjoying the city’s vibrant cultural life.
Practical planning tips: check official event listings for dates, locations and potential ticket requirements; allow extra time for popular exhibits and performances; and consider pairing a walking route that links key historical sites with nearby museums and galleries to make the most of your visit.
