Arrival/Check-In: I arrived via the Metro from the airport and worried briefly about finding the hotel from Gregorio Marañón station early in the morning after an overnight flight. To my relief, the hotel was right at the top of the station steps. The lobby was quiet at that hour, and reception directed me to the fifth-floor Royal Club for a private, efficient check-in.
Guest Quarters: Royal Club guests receive several perks beyond the private check-in. Highlights included a welcome tray with Cava and snacks, daily complimentary breakfast, afternoon refreshments, complimentary WiFi and one complimentary shoe shine.
I traveled with a close friend, and our suite was generous in size and layout. A small foyer led into a living area with a couch, armchair and coffee table. A compact desk sat in the corner, while a rotating TV on a dresser divided the living space from the sleeping area. Two double beds, each with its own nightstand, provided comfortable, restful nights. A closet and dressing area was tucked off the bedroom, and the large marble bathroom featured both a Jacuzzi tub and a separate shower.
We were grateful for early check-in, since most of Madrid was still closed when we arrived. After the long flight, it was a relief to rest in the inviting beds for a few hours before beginning the day.
Services/Amenities: My schedule was busy, so aside from the Royal Club’s complimentary breakfast and afternoon snacks—which were satisfying—I didn’t dine extensively on the property. The hotel does offer multiple on-site dining choices, including Restaurante Arco with a breakfast buffet, El Jardín del Miguel Ángel for outdoor dining, a lobby bar, and Restaurant M29.
The fitness center, pool and spa are worth scheduling time for. The gym’s modern equipment and spacious layout make it easy to forget you’re in a hotel, while the pool area is inviting for a swim or relaxation.
The Royal Club concierge and check-in staff were consistently helpful, assisting with dinner reservations and providing local suggestions. They greeted us warmly whenever we entered or left the hotel, and the main lobby staff were equally friendly and attentive.
The Experience: Situated adjacent to a Metro station, the Occidental San Miguel Ángel offers a convenient base for exploring Madrid while remaining removed from the busiest tourist crowds. Its location provides easy access to the city without the constant hustle of the center, creating a more peaceful stay. Overall, my visit to Madrid from this hotel was excellent.
