In 2012 I joined Team In Training, an initiative of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) that trains participants for half and full marathons, bike races and triathlons while raising funds for the organization. The coaching and community support were invaluable: crossing the finish line of my first half marathon, having never been a runner, gave me a powerful sense of accomplishment. I met lifelong friends, heard the stories of survivors and patients living with blood cancers, and witnessed how donations directly fueled research and patient support. After that experience I asked myself, what else can I do?
Nearly 1.2 million people in the United States are living with or in remission from leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. It’s likely you know someone affected by a blood cancer. If you’re wondering how to help, here is one opportunity.

What Are Blood Cancers?
Leukemia: Cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. The most common types include acute myeloid leukemia (AML), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).
In recent estimates, more than 50,000 new cases of leukemia are diagnosed in the United States each year.
Lymphoma: A group of cancers that develop in the lymphatic system. The two main categories are Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Tens of thousands of new lymphoma cases are diagnosed annually in the United States.
Myeloma: A cancer that begins in the bone marrow and affects plasma cells. Forms include multiple myeloma, plasmacytoma, localized myeloma and extramedullary disease. Myeloma is part of a broader spectrum known as plasma cell dyscrasias.
